If you are looking for a quick introduction to PHP I would recommend this book. PHP 3 is outdated. PHP4 is released, and 5 is on the way. Sometimes reading a book that is outdated is not worth the time and this one contains some concepts that have been deprecated but most of the content is still usable. It covers the basics of the language, how to build functions, and classes, database connectivity with mySQL, php's regular expression functions, and xml handling. The two chapters on XML contain little usefull information to an experienced programmer and not enough info for a newbie. The book is a good introduction to PHP, and provided me with enough info to create a web based recipe database with mySQL (speaking from the perspective of an experienced Java programmer). Most readers will need further study after reading this book.
